This is a question mark series.

University of Nebraska Athletics

Every day for the next couple weeks we'll take a look at a Husker who we've seen or heard some promising things from, and are now entering that 'maybe they're ready for more' phase in Basically, guys who will hope to eliminate that question mark. We didn't see as much of this defensive lineman newcomer as we maybe thought we would inbut injury seemed a bigger part of it than any lack of faith from coaches that he could help Nebraska's cause.

The player: Jordon Riley. The data: He played in more games than you maybe think. Riley saw snaps in six of the eight contests last fall, with his debut in the second game against Northwestern, where he was credited with his only tackle. You got the impression from camp interviews he was going to play more snaps than he did, but it's worth noting he suffered a knee injury just prior to the season opener, which lingered. Just now I'm starting to see him get his twitch back," Husker defensive line coach Tony Tuioti said in December with just a couple games left in the season.

He's starting to look like the guy I saw in training camp that to me was going to have a really, really good season for us. The good news is that year was a freebie eligibility-wise, so Riley still has two seasons to make it happen at Nebraska with a full lede-in to this next one.

He's a monster of a man at, who actually makes some of even his big D-line counterparts look small. Prior to going against Minnesota's big D-line late in the year, Tuioti said, "There's a reason why we recruited Jordon Rileyto help us versus teams like this. The backstory: Riley winded his way from here after a couple previous stops — first at North Carolina in and He played in two games and had four tackles that first year, then redshirted in He moved on to Garden City Kan.

Riley was singled out by Collin Miller to the media after the first day of spring practice as a guy who had his attention in the first practice. While Khalil and Carlos Davis were unique talents athletically at their size, and Khalil's going to be enjoying that Super Bowl ring on his finger after one year in the NFL, Riley is part of that recruitment of bigger and longer prospects that has been consistent as Erik Chinander and staff build up that defense.

It's hard. But when you're longer, you can get away with some stuff. Now Carlos and Khalil, obviously, just their exceptional athleticism helped them decrease their chance for error. I got a lot better at pass rushing, but I put a lot of pride in stopping the run.

So that was part of a strong first impression, how he immediately got to work in the weight room. The reason he could make a move: Because prior to his physical setback just before the season, he was already considered part of Nebraska's D-line rotation by Tuioti. While Casey Rogers took off, and Ty Robinson had a useful redshirt freshman campaign, and Damion Daniels showed he could elevate his snap count, and Ben Stille is back for one more year, the Huskers are going to want at least seven or eight they feel really good about in the rotation, and Riley would seem to have a jump start on that.

Among other things, he gives another option at the nose to go with Daniels, and one of the competitors at that spot Keem Green transferred. There were others who will factor in — Mosai Newsom and Nash Hutmacher are interesting ones to track — but Riley is a full-grown dude who isn't a rook learning things anymore.

Last year, Tuioti said, "H e's asking a bunch of questions. He's asking the older guys questions in terms of what to do. It means a lot to him to come here and play and contribute right away. While it wasn't a straight line here, nor was last year anything resembling that either, Riley's past experiences could also be an edge if used correctly.

He's got a bunch of abilityBleacher Report Logo. The Huskers have to replace their top WR for the third straight season. Here's the picture moving forward. Former NU offensive lineman Jaimes gives Husker fans something to ponder with comments.
